| Customer Reviews: Thompson's history from behind his own camera lens January 13, 2010 D. Goodwin (Atlanta, GA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Most fans of the good Dr. Thompson know him from his words (or more unfortunately, from Johnny Depp's caricature in the Vegas film). Gonzo is a unique book that shows HST's prowess behind the camera lens, documenting his own life, work and experience. The book is organized in a loose chronology of his life, with related excerpts from his writing. From his service days on Eglin AFB in Florida to his time with Sandy at Big Sur and in the Caribbean to the Vegas era and on the '72 campaign trail, Thompson beautifully captured the large and small elements of the world around him. The most fascinating images are not of Thompson's public persona, but the private photos from his time in Puerto Rico, Woody Creek and Key West. HST used the camera to augment his memory; images of a hotel table filled with his odds and ends are as memorable as the more famous photos! The only glaring omissions are photos from the last two decades of his life; the book would be a more complete document if it included images of his entire life.
The 'literary edition' now available is in a smaller format than the original release, but retains the high-quality uncoated paper of the original run. The graphic design of the book is excellent, with vibrating color schemes as surreal as HST's world! I can't recommend it enough to fans of Dr. Thompson.
Fantastic book, Fantastic intro, Fantastic bio, FANTASTIC! December 9, 2009 Bridget Darcy (California) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
If you're a fan of Hunter S. Thompson, if you're a fan of journalism, writing, reading or if you're just a fan of very cool and fascinating things -- check out this book! This new, literary edition, has an amazing biography from writer Ben Corbett that will astonish and amaze you. Not to mention all the great aspects of the book as the previous edition -- the cool photos, clips and intro by Johnny Depp. Pick up a copy -- I did! -- and I know you won't regret it.
